Case Study: Hartford County Bridge

Written by Dawn Decker | May 14, 2021

The Hartford County Bridge in Avon, Connecticut, presented drivers with a steep hill and bad sight lines at Route 10 and Old Farms Road for far too long. This $14.6 million project moved 56,000 cubic yards of earth during construction to level off the road and create a safer intersection and eco-friendly structure. What should’ve taken three months to complete, this skilled project team replaced the bridge in just two short weeks.

Replacing the Hartford County Bridge

With traffic congestion and drivers frequently accelerating up the slope from a dead stop at red lights, the intersection became especially difficult to navigate on icy, snow-covered roads. Through cross-team collaboration, the bridge replacement enhanced safety and preserved surrounding historical and environmental elements.

“That bridge is something the town was looking at even before 1995. We’re delighted the DOT made it a part of the project. This is a win-win.” -Brandon Robertson, Town Manager

“Facing unprecedented delivery requirements for super-loads, it was the collaboration between ROTHA’s team and our transportation department that made this job mutually successful. Fifteen total 32″/71″ PCEF girders as long as 137′ feet and weighing up to seventy tons each were delivered matching ROTHA’s erection plan.” -Jamie Campbell, Director of Sales, Northeast Prestressed Products, LLC

ACHIEVE MORE WITH PRECAST

By utilizing precast concrete solutions, designers and architects came together to erect a hotel that achieved the aesthetic and maintenance goals of the building owner. Not only did the team provide a unique building with enhanced structural durability, but it did so on an accelerated, cost-effective project timeline.
