The Naval Facilities Engineering Command in southern Maryland needed new military housing capable of holding 336 beds in under four months. Precast producer Tindall Corporation led the project, utilizing a total precast design to meet accelerated timeline goals without sacrificing quality or durability.
The team took a Design-Build approach to the Naval Air Station Patuxent River - Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (PAX BEQ), allowing key design and construction stakeholders to coordinate in early stages of the project to mitigate risk that might slow them down or drain extra resources later in the process.
The PAX BEQ is the result of the project team’s close collaboration and attention-to-detail in the planning phase of construction. The brand new, five-story building is designed to house over 500 enlisted personnel and support more than 100,000 square feet of floor space. The facility is a total precast structure including insulated architectural wall panels, transfer beams, double tees, flat slabs, and more. In its completion, the construction timeline was cut by six months.

“Tindall’s on-site supervision and ability to respond timely to issues or concerns is second to none. Tindall did an outstanding job on making our schedule and doing whatever was necessary to ensure the next critical activity was not delayed and the schedule was maintained.” -Jeff Mallow, Field Operations Manager, Harkins Builders
While the project’s initial design plan didn’t call for a total precast solution, the team switched gears and moved forward with one due to restrictions related to the construction space, schedule, and budget. This was the more efficient and cost-effective solution than what the original RFP bridging documents displayed, lending to satisfaction for all stakeholders upon completion.
ACHIEVE MORE WITH PRECAST
