- Coastal Precast Systems’ Marc Basnight Bridge project was spotlighted in PCI Journal. The Marc Basnight Bridge/Replacement of the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge, a 2020 PCI Sustainable Design and Transportation Award winning project, was highlighted in the September/October issue of PCI Journal with a cover and featured article. The project was complex and challenging on a number of fronts. First, with location: Providing a 100-year service life for a bridge subject to an extremely harsh saltwater environment in addition to minimizing disruption to vulnerable aquatic beds and sea life. Second, with design and performance requirements: The number of pieces required for the project were massive—precast concrete caps originally too heavy to ship by truck to the site and traditional girders and piles—so traditional fabrication tolerances had to be updated and expanded. Through excellent collaboration between the North Carolina Department of Transportation, HDR as the engineer of record, PCL Civil Constructors, and Coastal Precast Systems, the project met the owner’s requirements and created a beautiful and sustainable structure that the community loves.
